In Part Two of this two-part series, NHCCC members are sharing aspects of culture from Central to Northeast China, including Shanxi, Anhui, Beijing, and Shandong. The geography, cityscape, and dialects of Central and Northeast China are inspirations to its rich musical legacy.

Spring Flowers
Spring is here! Seasons and nature played an important role in traditional Chinese arts and poetry. Come see New Haven Chinese Cultural Cooperative in this spring-themed program and hear how nature is incorporated in traditional music and poetry. You will experience songs about flowers and flowing water, and Tang Dynasty poetry about nature.

Lunar New Year Celebration
Come celebrate the arrival of The Year of Snake with New Haven Chinese Cultural Cooperative in Manchester this year. We are bringing raucous percussion (Chinese drums, gongs, cymbals, bells…), in addition to traditional Chinese music instruments like erhu, dizi, guzheng, yangqin, pipa, ruan, and sheng. Enjoy a truly festive ambiance with many of our new year favorites - “Beautiful Flowers and Full Moon,” “Beaming with Joy,” “Rising Higher Step by Step,“ and more. Lunar New Year Celebration is a family friendly event and we look forward to seeing audience of all ages moving to our tunes!

A Listening Journey I: Scenes from Jiangnan and beyond
Come see NHCCC in “A Listening Journey Part I: Scenes from Jiangnan and Beyond.” You will experience the physical beauty of the “silk and bamboo,” the intricate melodies and improvisational musical style, and some poetry by Bai Juyi. This is also the first event for our new members. Come cheer us on!

Fall Harvest and Celebration
Fall is about harvest, harvest moon, nostalgia, but also celebration. This October, with students of Ansonia High School, In addition to our presentation and poetry recitation about the Autumn in the Chinese culture, we are also sharing interesting facts and history about our unique traditional instruments. A post-presentation discussion will follow.

Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration
We are bringing a whole new Mid-Autumn Festival program to Miss Porter School this year. Songs about the moon, harvest, nostalgia, in addition to a recitation of Tang Dynasty poetry and a playful palace dance.

International Festival of Arts and Ideas

AAPI Heritage Month Celebration at Pierrepont
To help celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, we are giving three performances/workshops for students at Pierrepont School to learn about Chinese instruments and the different musical styles around China and Taiwan.

New Haven Night Market
To help celebrate AAPI Month, New Haven Night Market has invited us to play a full set of music outdoors. In addition to some longtime favorites, we are also featuring the three Chinese fiddles in our version of Racing Horse, half a dozen percussionists on a song about bickering ducklings, the transverse flutes as grasshoppers taunting the rooster, and a Taiwanese drinking song for this festive occasion.

Westville ArtWalk
We are so excited to be invited to perform at at Westville’s ArtWalk this year. This is an outdoor event in the park so come see us and enjoy an hour of fun and sunshine.
In addition to our spring program, we are bringing some songs about rowdy ducklings, battling grasshoppers, racing horses, and a goldfish at the bottom of a glass.

A Musical Celebration of Spring
This spring concert is all about - flowers. Many Chinese tunes are written about flowers - orchid, jasmine, rose, peach blossoms... We are excited to share these beautiful musical blossoms with residents at Whitney Center.

Experience Chinese Music with NHCCC
“Experience Chinese Music with NHCCC” is sponsored by Hopkins School as a part of the Lunar New Year series. During these 70 minutes, you will be surrounded by the rich sounds of traditional Chinese music instruments. We will play some New Year favorites in addition to a variety of ensemble pieces and a dance from different cultural traditions in the Chinese speaking world.

NHCCC Open House
